At the end of 2024, I asked if anyone would be interested in a book club that combines books and crochet, and the response was great! So began the lit Stitches Book Club! Each month, we will read a book, and I will design a project to correspond to the story in some way. The projects will start off simply, and increase in difficulty as the year goes on.
I went with an old faithful for January, A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. I absolutely LOVE this book! It's full of heart, humor, and wisdom. Fredrik Backman is one of my favorite authors. He does such a beautiful job of interweaving his characters and connecting their stories in such a wonderful, poignant way.

To go along with our January selection, I
designed a simple ear warmer that I called Sonja's Headband. This headband is red with a pink flower and ties into the book in the following ways:
Every time that Sonja's clothes are described, she's wearing red:
She's wearing red shoes the first time that Ove sees her.
She's wearing a red cardigan for their first date.
She's wearing a red dress in a picture from Spain.
The pink flower is to symbolize the flowers that Ove gives Sonja on their first date. He also gives her pink flowers every week in the current timeline.
"And now she stood outside the station with his flowers pressed happily to her breast, in all that red cardigan of hers, making the rest of the world look as if it was made in greyscale."
Our first book club meeting went really well, and I'm excited to continue this project throughout the year. I have pictures of our gathering below, but first I want to share the free pattern for Sonja's Headband! If you would like a free pdf version of this pattern, click here.
I know some of my Lit Stitchers had never crocheted before, so here is a video that I found that shows how to single crochet. She moves very slowly; I hope this helps those of you who are struggling.
Sonja's Headband

Materials Needed:
Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick Yarn – Cranberry and Rouge
Hook N/10 mm
Tapestry Needle
Button (optional)
Abbreviations:
sts = stitches
ch = chain
ch-sp = chain space
sc = single crochet
sk = skip
sl st = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
tr = triple crochet
Notes:
The finished size of this headband is 10” x 4” when laying flat.
To make your headband smaller or bigger around, increase or decrease your beginning chain. Be sure that you have an even number.
To make your headband wider, continue Round 3 until desired size.
Instructions in * will be repeated.
The numbers after the = are the total stitches for that round.
Headband
Made with Cranberry color.
Round 1: Leaving a 6” tail, loosely chain 46. Sc in 2nd chain from hook and each other chain. Your piece should measure about 21” laying flat. Making sure not to twist your work, bring the first and last stitch together to form a loop. Sl st into first stitch. = 46 (See picture below.)
Round 2: Chain 1, sc in same stitch. Ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next. Repeat * section until 1 stitch remains. Ch 1, sl st to beginning ch 1. = 23 sc, 23 ch-sp
Round 3: Turn, but do not ch. You are now working on the inside of your headband. Sc in the 1st ch-sp. Ch 1, sc in next ch-sp. Repeat * section to last ch-sp. Ch 1, sl st to beginning sc. = 23 sc, 23 ch-sp.
Rounds 4 –8: Repeat Round 3.
Round 9: Do not turn. Ch 1. Sc in each sc and ch-sp. Sl st to beginning ch. = 46 Fasten off and hide ends.
Using a tapestry needle, take your end from Round 1 and sew the bottom shut. Hide ends. (See picture below.)
Flower
Made with Rouge color.
Round 1: Chain 3, sl st to first ch to make a loop. Ch 1 (counts as an sc), 5 sc in circle. Do NOT sl st at the end of this round. = 6 (You can also start your flower by making a magic circle, ch 1 and 5 sc in circle.)
Round 2: Put 2 sc in each st. Sl st to beginning sc. = 12
Round 3: In same stl st, Ch 2, dc, tr, dc. Ch 2 and sl st back to SAME stitch. So, in first stitch, you will have a sl st, Ch 2, dc, tr, dc, ch 2, sl st. First petal made. Sl st in the next st. In next st, make another petal, so sl st, ch 2, dc, tr, dc, ch 2, sl st. Continue around, putting a sl st in one stitch and a petal in the next. After making your last petal, fasten off, leaving a very long tail. = 6 petals, 6 sl st.
If you’d like to add a button to your flower, do so now. Then sew your flower onto the headband. Hide all ends from flower.
And that's it! You've created your very own ear warmer, perfect for winter!
